BRG’s Celebration of 2018 Louisiana Arbor Week Included Plantings, Luncheon

On Saturday, January 13, 2018, Baton Rouge Green worked with nearly two dozen volunteers to plant six 15-gallon Baldcypress, the state tree of Louisiana, as part of The Walls Project’s MLK Festival of Service 2018. The trees, donated by the LSU Aquaculture Research Station, were planted next to Big Brothers Meat Market. The event helped kick off Baton Rouge Green’s celebrations for Louisiana Arbor Week.

On Monday, January 15, Baton Rouge Green also worked with dozens of volunteers from Americorps and other groups to plant 22 canopy trees, including baldcypress, winged elm and bur oak, near The Women’s Help Center at 76th Street and Scenic Highway (see below.)

Arbor Day is a nationally celebrated observance that encourages tree planting and care. Although in most of the country Arbor Day is celebrated later in the year, Louisiana’s Arbor Day is always the third Friday in January, tree-planting season in South Louisiana.
