The Advocate: BRG’s 4,341 Living Roadways trees prevent 11 million gallons of stormwater runoff yearly

April 23, 2018 – Baton Rouge, LA

Baton Rouge Green released a report stating that the 4,341 trees that the non-profit organization maintains along area interstates and major roads as part of its’ Living Roadways program are doing considerable heavy lifting in the environment. According the report, which is based on the U.S. Forest Service’s i-Tree model, these 4,300+ trees prevent the runoff of 11 millions gallons of stormwater and sequester or cause the avoidance of over 1.35 millions pounds of cardon dioxide annually, among numerous other ecological benefits. The report also states that the replacement value of these 4,341 trees is estimated at over $19 million.

Baton Rouge Green has been undertaking an inventory of public trees of East Baton Rouge Parish since 2015, with about 20,000 being cataloged to-date on a cloud-based platform using the i-Tree model.

A story in The Advocate by Steve Hardy about the report can be found here.
